Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Harmony
Lift every voice and sing!
The Dubuque Chorale, Cadenza, and the Children’s Choirs finish the concert season with a program inspired by America’s founding ideals. Featured are songs that encourage us to appreciate the gifts of life, empower us to work toward liberty for all, and urge our community to come together in harmony. Some examples include:
Life
“Life” by Jacob Narverud and the Shaker tune “Simple Gifts” remind us to be grateful for the many blessings of life, while Pamela Stewart and Greg Gilpin’s “What Is Life?” poses questions about the meaning of life.
Liberty
“Step by Step” by Joan Szymko, using the words of the preamble to the 1870 constitution of the American Miners Union, and the powerful hymn “Lift Ev’ry Voice and Sing,” both honor the long tradition of music as part of peaceful organization while working together toward a common goal.
Pursuit of Harmony
David Schwoebel’s arrangement of “God of Harmony and Beauty,” and Stephen Chatman’s “Thou Whose Harmony Is the Music of the Spheres,” each provide a connection between harmony in life and music by invoking the higher power of God and the vastness of the universe. The finale, Michael Jackson’s “Heal the World,” makes a heartfelt plea for compassion and encourages everyone to do their part in making a better world.
