The Dubuque Chorale and Clarke Collegiate Singers are the special guests of the the Julien Winds and Clarke Wind Ensemble in this collaborative concert on the Clarke campus. The program is one of sacred works old and new, performed by the groups both individually and together.

The concert’s featured work is Anton Bruckner’s Mass No. 2 in E minor, written by tbe Austrian composer in 1866. Its orchestration for a wind ensemble, without strings, is somewhat unique for such compositions of that period. The 40-minute work is typical of Bruckner’s romantic style, with rich harmonies, thick-textured vocals, and unexpected dissonances and modulations.

Also featured is a premier performance of American composer David Avshalomov’s Nigun Prophecy. The work is built from traditinal Jewish “nigun,” tunes of rhythmic syllables sung in unison at worship and other gatherings. Each nigun is introduced by the vocalists—Dubuque Chorale Cadenza in this case—then ellaborated by the winds.

Other pieces performed includd Johannes Brahms’ “Ihr habt nun Traurigkeit,” from Ein Deutches Requiem, St. Olaf College composer Timothy Mahr’s Fantasia in G, Victoria’s O Quam Gloriosum, and other sacred works.
