Dubuque Chorale

Past, Present & Preview

Sunday October 24, 3:00 pm
First Congregational, Dubuque

After a year-and-a-half-long COVID-19 hiatus, the Dubuque Chorale is thrilled to be singing once again! We kick off our 50th anniversary season with numbers we were unable to perform last year, and preview some music coming up next spring for our Anniversary Concert.

Program

Many of the musical selections are pieces the Chorale had begun preparing for its spring 2020 concert, “Great Innovators,” celebrating some of music’s most groundbreaking composers. Works range from Berlioz’s spooky Le Ballet des Ombres (“Dance of the Ghosts”), to Verdi’s fascinating Ave Maria based on an unusual “enigmatic scale,” to Dennis Kam’s noteless and improvisational two moves and a slow scat. Particularly lovely is Pergolesi's Stabat Mater Dolorsa, sung by the women of the Chorale.

In addition to these numbers from the past season, the concert also looks forward with a preview of music from the Chorale’s upcoming 50th Anniversary Concert. Noteworthy is a work by composer Melissa Dunphy, co-commissioned by the Dubuque Chorale, entitled Amendment: Righting Our Wrongs. It celebrates the 100th anniversary of the ratification of the 19th Amendment to the US Constitution.

Admission is free of charge. A freewill offering will be taken.

Per CDC guidance, because Dubuque County currently has a “high” transmission rate of COVID-19, the performers and audience are required to wear masks.
