Anniversary Concert

Saturday May 14, 7:30 pm
Sunday May 15, 2:00 pm
Grand Opera House, 135 West 8th St, Dubuque

The Dubuque Chorale, Cadenza, and Children’s Choir close their 50th Anniversary season by welcoming back founding director Dennis Williams and past directors Fran Vogt and Bob Demaree. Along with current director Amanda Huntleigh, Children’s Choir director Karmella Sellers, and associate director Than Chesher, they will lead the singers and orchestra in a retrospective of music the Chorale has performed during its 50-year history, and present a work by composer Melissa Dunphy, co-commissioned by the Chorale.

Program

The first half opens with “And the Glory of the Lord” and the “Hallelujah” Chorus from Handel’s Messiah, works performed by the Chorale at its first concert 50 years ago. The performance proceeds with music from each decade since, the numbers selected and conducted by the director from each period. Long-time audience members will recognize many great works by the likes of Haydn, René Clausen, Morten Lauridsen, and others. The Dubuque Chorale Children’s Choir bridges the past and present with pieces by Engelbert Humperdinck, Bob Marley, and a number from the Broadway musical Hamilton.

The centerpiece of the second half is Dunphy’s Amendment: Righting our Wrongs, celebrating the 100th anniversary of the ratification of the 19th Amendment to the US Constitution. The work was co-commissioned by the Dubuque Chorale and 10 other choirs around the country.

Please join the Dubuque Chorale in celebrating 50 years of music-making!
