The Dubuque Chorale, Cadenza, and Children’s Choir are joined by the renowned Minneapolis-based bluegrass band Monroe Crossing for a performance of bluegrass and country-themed music. The groups will perform individually and together.
The centerpiece of the concert is a performance of Carol Barnett’s The World Beloved: A Bluegrass Mass, composed especially for Monroe Crossing. It combines the folk sounds of bluegrass with the voices of the Chorale to produce an exhilarating blend of the classical Mass, poetry, and traditional bluegrass instrumentation. Monroe Crossing premiered the work in 2007 and has since performed it across the country.
In conjunction with the main performance events, Carol Barnett will lecture at area colleges. On Thursday November 2 at 6:30 pm, she and local musician Denny Garcia will give a talk about bluegrass music at the Multicultural Family Center, 1157 Central Ave. in Dubuque.
Tickets for the Saturday performance at Five Flags are $20, box seats $30, and go on sale September 1. The Sunday performance at UW-P is $20 for adults, $15 for students. Check back soon for details on how to purchase.
